Chris AltreeFor Barrow and Furness
Over the past few weeks I have been posting a regular blog on facebook, detailing some of my thoughts, visions and ideas on how we can shape Furness and the future. Please use the buttons below to navigate through and have a read of them:
PROUD TO BE NOMINATED BY THE BARROW BRANCH OF THE LABOUR PARTY & PROUDLY supported by RMT Barrow in Furness No.1 Branch
About Me At A Glance
I am deeply honoured to have been chosen for the shortlist and have the chance to ask you for your support.
Born in Furness General Hospital, I have grown up, lived and worked in Barrow for most of my life. My sister is a registered NHS nurse and like most I have friends and family working in the shipyard. It is this deep connection, understanding of and commitment to the Furness area that leads me to ask for the opportunity to serve as your Labour Candidate.
Under Labour I was offered hope. The son of a single disabled parent from Ormsgill, I was able to attend college with a maintenance allowance and studied politics at university.
I chose to join the British Army in 2008 as an engineer in The Royal Corp of Signals. I served my country in The Falklands and Afghanistan, leaving as a Lance Corporal in 2013. But Barrow drew me back when I secured a job with Network Rail as a Railway Signaller, staffing the Park South signal box. As a trade unionist and railwayman, I fully support current industrial action and the need for a high-quality, safe, transport system, with improved links in the area.
I am a carer for my mother and until her recent passing, my grandmother. I know too well the pressure on the vulnerable by this government’s assault on our NHS and public services. Labour protects these workers – I would protect and work for them too.
I work closely with local educators as a board member of the Bluebirds Trust and know the challenges faced by our school communities.
Labour values have sustained me from Furness to Falklands, from academia to Afghanistan. They are why I hope you give me the chance to represent you as your candidate.
